Club History

Tredegar Arms AFC – New Tredegar Football Club were formed in 1992, they were born in their spiritual home of the Tredegar Arms Hotel.  Having played 5–a-side for 2 years 1990/92, club members David Beynon, Michael Moore, John Morgan, Huw Walbeoff and Darran Watkins decided it was time that New Tredegar had a senior football team again.  The next 18 months 1992/93 were spent playing friendlies against a host of local sides including some veteran teams in preparation for joining a local senior league

In 1994 the club were accepted into the Rhymney Valley Sunday Football League playing their home games at Grove Park, Greenfield Street. The team remained in the Rhymney Valley League for the following 7 seasons until the end of season 2000/01.

In the 7 seasons that the club were in the Rhymney Valley League the club were promoted to the Premier Division and finished Premier runners-up on three occasions, completed the Cup and Charity Shield double in season 1999/00 and were runners up in the Cup in season 2000/01.

During this period the club were sponsored by Matrix Plastics who were based in Slough, the proprietor however was born and bred in Aberbargoed and had strong ties to the Tredegar Arms Hotel.

The club also entered overseas tours.  During their time in the Rhymney Valley League they attended competitions in Ostende (2000) and Antwerp (2001). The club was sponsored for its overseas tours by Traffic Management Systems a local Valleys company with very strong links to New Tredegar.

In 2001 the club decided that it needed a new challenge and decided to apply to the North Gwent League. During the 5 seasons in the North Gwent League the club won back-to-back league titles moving from the Second Division through to the Premier Division.  The club have also played in 6 Cup Finals winning on one occasion.

During the years 2002-2007 the club continued to tour each year visiting Amsterdam (2002), Middlekerke (2003), Portugal (2004) Ostende (2005), Bulgaria (2006) and Belfast in 2007, where the club played a lively game against Queens University Belfast.  The clubs best overseas finish to date has come in their inaugural tournament losing in the semi-final at Ostende.

The club started a Youth Team during 2004/05 season, the club were entered into the Gwent County Youth League and played competitively in the First Division for the 2 seasons. The Youth Team achieved creditable finishes against some of the best youth teams in South East Wales which were feeder teams for clubs at professional level.  The team were unlucky to lose a cup semi-final in the last minute of extra time.  During this period the headquarters of the club moved from the Tredegar Arms Hotel to the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Cwmsyfiog as the TA was closed.

As the youth team aged the TAAFC committee decided it had the platform it required to form a Saturday League team, the first senior Saturday League team in New Tredegar for almost 30 years. Geraint Evans was appointed manager.

The team’s inaugural year 2006/07 was spent in the First Division of the North Gwent Saturday League, finishing a very credible 5th and scoring over 100 goals in their debut season.

The club has been sponsored for the past 3 seasons by MWM Plumbing & Heating Ltd, a local New Tredegar company that has very strong links with the club.

So we end where we started back at The Tredegar Arms Hotel where the club were happy to be reacquainted to their spiritual home in 2006. Special mention must be made of the support the club has received from the proprietors of the “best ale house in the stratosphere” Ieuan Prosser, Steve “Jonah” Jones, Ivor Edwards, Martha Gabb, Darran Watkins and at present Victor Pugh we honestly could not have done it without your support – we raise a glass to you in thanks.
